Recording my new single

I'm going to record the vocals for my brand new single later this week! The song is called "Die From A Broken Heart" and will be produced by the man behind italo disco project Cloetta Paris. I'm so excited about this!

It's so nice to be back in the studio after such a long break from the music business. I can't believe it's been years since I released a brand new track. I needed a break from everything and this time I'm in it for the love of music only.

I would like to thank you all for your patience! I've seen a lot of disgusting sides of the music industry through the years and it almost made me give up. And as some of you know, I've also been having some health issues, but now, the bitch is back!

This time around, I'm just going have fun and enjoy myself, and if some people like what I do, that's just a big bonus. There's no pressure whatsoever! I'm taking it step by step, on my own terms.

My new name

It's official! I have legally changed my name. Per Dennis Svedberg Hellström doesn't exist anymore. Say hello to Dennis Alexis Hellström. I hope you like the new name as much as I do! I removed Per because I never felt comfortable with that name, and I removed Svedberg out of personal reasons.

As you might have figured out, I've taken the name Alexis from my idol Joan Collins' "Dynasty" character Alexis Carrington Colby. So if you want to you can now call me Alexis or Dennis Alexis. But Dennis is fine too. I feel great about this!

Summer of '07

I'm sorry that I haven't written for a while but I've been really busy. Don't think that I've disappeared. I'm spending most of my time writing on my novels and planning new songs. A lot of exciting things are happening but I can't tell you about it just yet.

I've had an article about homophobia published in Aftonbladet, one of Sweden's biggest newspapers, and I've also been interviewed by some Swedish websites.

Hello!
I'm sorry about not writing for a while. As many of you already know I haven't been feeling well lately. I'm taking a timeout from my music career so I can get some rest. During that time I'll be writing on my novel, which is very calming.

The novel is a gay love story taking place on board the Titanic. I've always loved that ship and I've always wanted to write a Titanic novel from a homosexual boy's point of view. It will be released in Swedish but if you understand that language you are more than welcome to order it when it's released.

My performance at Skakk Helg in Norway went really great! I performed "Je Suis Une Superstar", "Drama Queen (Champagne Synth Remix)", "Earthquake (Plastic Sex Mix)", "Make You Come" and "Oh Mama". I would like to thank everyone who arranged the festival and all of you came to see me. You are all amazing!

The music video to "Drama Queen" has won the category Best music video in Wreck Beach International Film Festival, in Canada. I would like to congratulate Johnny Wu and all the people behind the video!

The release party was a success! I would like to thank everyone who came and everyone who helped with the preparations. Especially my dear friend Micke and the staff at Club Connection.

My single "Drama Queen" reached number three on the sales chart of CDON last week. The same week it was chosen "hit of the week" at the radio station Radiovox. The music video "Drama Queen" has now been recorded and will soon be available to all of you. Johnny Wu and his team have done a fantastic job and several film festivals in the USA want to screen it. Hopefully, Bimbo Boy will soon be entering the American dance floors.

In February, my single will be sent to the biggest radio stations in Sweden. "Record Sweden Promotion" will promote the single and they are already promoting artists such as Madonna, Bananarama, Him, The Darkness, Lil' Kim and Enya. The single will also be available at CDON.com where listeners from all over Europe can order it.

Disco Down

The release of "Drama Queen" is near! We are planning to release the single in February and I recently got a distribution deal. It all feels great! Eurovision

A lot of things have happened during the summer! I finally released my debut single "Je Suis Une Superstar". It will soon be available for purchase to foreign fans as well. My single has been sold at the Stockholm Pride festival and played at different clubs and radio stations. The online radio station Playdio chose my song "Make You Come" to be their hit of the week and it is still playing there.

A lot of magazines and websites have written about me and my music. Some of them are available to read on my website.

Finally I want to tell you that the song Anders Dannvik and I have written for the Swedish Eurovision Song Contest now is finished. It will be sent to the jury later this month. It's a synth-disco song influenced by Bodies Without Organs, Pay TV and Alcazar. Let's hope it will be accepted!

"Je Suis Une Superstar" is made for the dance yearning clientele at the nightclubs. Bomb the Swedish nightlife with this and Bimbo Boy will get the chance to become big to the people who already like the disco Alexander Bard symbolises.

Working on my single

There are lots of things going on in my life right now. I just graduated from school and I've got a busy summer ahead of me. Next week, for example, I'm going to Stockholm to write a song together with the song writer Anders Dannvik. We're going to write something for the Eurovision Song Contest 2006.

I have also had a photo shoot a few days ago together with my photographer Marie Larsson. We took a lot of pictures and I have to choose which one I want for the CD-cover, since I didn't like the last one. It's really great working with professional people.

Since September 2004, I've had over 40000 unique visitors on my website and I still have about 200 visitors a day. Thanks for helping me spread the word about my music! Have a wonderful summer!

Our production company is almost up and running. That means that my single "Je Suis Une Superstar" soon will be released. I'm really looking forward to it and I hope that all the paperwork won't delay the release.

An Italian company wants one of my songs on a CD with a collection of typical gay music. The songs are from all over the world and they want me to represent Sweden. It's a great honour for me and I'm negotiating about it.

We are all suffering from what happened in Asia so that's why I think we can use all the positive energy we can get. So keep on fighting for what you believe in and don't forget to smile.

There have been some updates on the website. As you can see, the picture page has been given a makeover and does now include more pictures. The quote page has also been updated with some new functions. For example, I will publish all the articles written about me there.

I also had my scene debut in the end of 2004. I have performed twice at some parties my school arranged. It was a wonderful experience and it went really great! I can't wait to get on stage again.

Here is the interview with me published in Annonsbladet:

We received a letter to the editor here at Annonsbladet, a letter where a young man expressed his feelings about prejudice, the importance of honesty and peoples' right to be themselves. The author is called Dennis Svedberg Hellström, is 20 years old, lives in Storvik and concentrates on a career as a singer. By the way, did I mention that Dennis is gay?

Dennis is a pretty usual young man. He is 20 years old, lives in Storvik, studies at a folk high school and hopes for a career as a pop artist. In a letter Dennis sent to Annonsbladet it's clear that he values people's honesty, fears prejudice and sees it as important that people have the right to be who they are. That is exactly why he makes no secret of being a homosexual, or gay as he himself prefer to say.

"I prefer to call myself gay."

- I think that homosexual sounds like a disease. I prefer to call myself gay, he says with a smile.

At the age of 13, Dennis admitted to himself that he actually didn't get turned on by girls. At that point the knowledge felt okay, it was a relief to finally accept it. About a year later he built up the courage and confessed his sexuality to his family.

- They didn't take my announcement very well, at least not in the beginning. They needed time to accept that their son and brother was gay, just as I needed time to accept it myself. I think that it was mainly about consideration. They feared that I would get into trouble because of my sexual orientation. The important thing is that I never considered adjusting myself or pretending to be someone else, despite the reactions of the surroundings. I always want to be myself, emphasizes.

Dennis describes himself as being "a little feminine". His personality goes with what often is considered as being typically homosexual, or "gay".

- My favorite colours are pink and light purple. I love the 80's with its sexy style and waved hairstyle and prefer to listen to music like Samantha Fox, Kylie Minogue and Kim Wilde. I'm considered to be a little feminine and maybe that is seen better when I hang out with my girlfriends. Well, maybe I am typically gay.

When Dennis was 16 years old and went to senior high school he "came out" in the local newspaper. It worked out well, except for some occasional comments from friends in school. His earlier years in school, on the other hand, were purely hell.

- I was bullied during all of my younger years in school. I listened to ABBA when everyone else played Michael Jackson, was generally feminine as well as heavily overweighed. I was of course a thankful victim. Those times were very hard and I have a lot of baggage that I still try to work with and handle. Maybe that is one of the reasons I think it's important to continue being myself and not adjusting.

Few like-minded people in a small town

He has never seen being gay and living in the community of Sandviken as a problem. It is true that there are no particularly networks or gatherings for homosexuals, but also no expressed violence like in big cities.

- It is not easy to find like-minded people in a small city like Sandviken. I'm grateful to Internet that really simplifies the connection between people around the world. For example there is an Internet community, a website that a lot of homosexuals visit to chat, meet friends or fix a date, he says.

Dennis has had one serious relationship that unfortunately broke because of the distance between them. Like many homosexuals it is easier for him to get sex than to enter a serious relationship.

- Many people nowadays explain that they are attracted to a person, despite gender, which can be seen as a form of bisexuality. Also many heterosexuals are curious, which extends the choice, he says with a glint in his eyes.

Openness for acceptance

During our conversation Dennis emphasizes how he appreciates people's honesty and detests prejudice. That is one of the reasons why he himself often declares his sexual orientation as soon as possible in the meeting with new people.

- I think we have to talk more about people's differences and their right to be themselves. To be open and straightforward with my opinions and values is important to me. My homosexuality is a part of me and I let it show pretty soon when I meet new people. I wish that every parent would talk to their children about everyone's equal value and homosexuality so it will be accepted.

Bimbo Boy

When Dennis talks about the future it is mostly about music. He has been singing since a child and his father and grandmother have a musical ear. In his musical career he acts under the name "Bimbo Boy".

- The name is a celebration to all wonderful, female artists and celebrities that has been called "bimbos" by the media and seen as unintelligent. Some great examples are my idols Samantha Fox and Kylie Minogue. I look up to these great artists who use sex in their image and music. I dislike the fact that only women are called bimbos and I want to get some kind of discussion started. No one would dream about calling Ricky Martin a bimbo. I just want to be the first male, clever bimbo. And also the name attracts some curiosity, which markets my music.

Dennis writes his own lyrics and a few years ago he got in contact with a producer in Uppsala who put music to two of his songs. They where marketed over the Internet and other producers got in touch and wanted to work with Dennis. Totally six of his songs have been recorded, and more is to follow. Today he is planning to start a production company together with his father to get his music out in the market and to make sure that the name Bimbo Boy will be found in the stores. Dennis Svedberg Hellström is a man with a hope for a community consisting of acceptance, openness, honesty and respect for each other. Whether he is going to have a breakthrough as an artist remains to be seen, I am however convinced that we will se more from Dennis in the future.

What is Pride?

This summer my friends and I went to the Stockholm Pride festival. This annual love festival for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people has taken place every summer since 1998 and has become more and more popular through the years. I've been thinking a lot about what Pride and homosexuality means to me and I'd like to share my thoughts with you.

I came out as a homosexual four years ago, 16 years old. After that I've changed a lot and become a completely different person. I feel more comfortable about myself and I enjoy my life more. My family didn't take it that well at first but now they don't have problems with me being a homosexual.

My dad once told me, concerning my sexuality: "You might get beaten up!" I just replied: "Dad, people get beaten up for a lot of things, it doesn't matter what you do. People get annoyed about everything. I'd rather get beaten up for being myself than pretending to be someone I'm not. The only way to make people get rid of their prejudice is to not hide. If we are going to change this society we have to dare to be ourselves."

I've always liked straight forward and honest people. There's nothing worse than people who talk behind people's backs. That's why I always think it's great when heterosexual people come up to me and ask questions. I've even experienced straight guys telling me that they are homophobic but are willing to change their opinion.

It's quite usual that straight guys have something against gay guys. I'm not really sure about why it is that way, but I guess it's because they're not secure about their own sexuality or that they in general are afraid of things they don't know much about. Many of them don't dare to approach these persons because they are afraid that the homosexual guys are going to make a move on them. They take it for granted that just because you're gay you hit on any male person. Isn't that silly? Even gay men have platonic relations to other guys, believe me!

Many people claim that homosexuality is abnormal and that it's against the laws of nature.
They often say that man was born with the instinct of reproduction. But it doesn't have to mean that just because you're straight you want to have children, does it? And besides, homosexuality exists among animals as well so why turn love into something biological? Actually I think that is pretty scary.

I believe that we are all born bisexual and that we then are affected by society to "choose" what suits us the most. When we are born we don't know anything, we are completely in reset status and indifferent. Almost everything that we know, we learn as children. In that way homosexuality may depend on upbringing or that kind of factors, or maybe it's genetic. Whatsoever, I don't think that there's nothing wrong with that. If your son wants to play with Barbie dolls and try on mother's clothes, let him do that. You don't want to force any roles on your child, do you?

Many people refer to religion to make homosexuality something sinful and abnormal.
I believe that if there is a God who is good, he accepts all human beings the way they are. My grandmother is religious and she often tells me that they sometimes discuss homosexuality in the church. She tells me quite clearly that she doesn't have any problems with that. It's good because it also tells me that there are many Christians who accept homosexuals.

I don't understand how people have the energy to get involved with other people's private lives. Why harass and hurt people just because they are different from you? Even if you would have problems with homosexual persons I think you might as well keep it for yourself or at least be open-minded for other opinions.

At first I found it a little bit silly to have a festival for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, because I thought that it would make the distance between members of the LGBT-society and heterosexuals even bigger. I tried to think about it differently and thought that it probably would be a little bit strange to have a similar love festival for heterosexual persons.
However, I changed my mind after a while. Just like other minority groups, LGBT-persons have often been harassed and persecuted because of their sexual orientation for many years. So why not let these people celebrate that they finally dare to be themselves? The fact that development has got so far that the hatred against LGBT-persons has decreased is a sign of us becoming more educated and that people listen more to their hearts and conscience.

So, what does Pride mean to me? Pride is for me a big celebration of love where for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people get together with heterosexuals and have fun. It's a festival that makes us who belong to this minority group to show that we dare to be ourselves and that we won't be oppressed. I hope that in the future we'll be more open for things that stand out and are a little different.
The most important thing is that we all respect each other.

Bimbo Boy is proud of his pink personality

Last week, the local entertainment magazine Nöjesmix wrote this article about me with an interview:

The editorial staff received a letter from Bimbo Boy. A sparkling artist in pink, from Sandviken, who thought that some attention would be nice and who was hoping to perform in this year's Stockholm Pride Festival.

Why do you call yourself Bimbo Boy?
It's because I've always looked up to female artists with a sexy image, for example Kylie Minogue and Samantha Fox. They've often been called bimbos by the media and that got me really pissed off. They haven't been taken seriously because of their image and I think that is wrong. So I decided to call myself Bimbo Boy, just to start some kind of discussion. Besides, not many guys would call themselves a bimbo since the word seems to only apply women. Bimbo Boy is a kind of provocative name for an artist and people notice it, which I like.

What's the goal with you being an artist?
The most important thing of course is the music, but I also see the music as a way to mediate things. I believe, as an artist, you have greater possibilities to reach people and make your voice heard.

Why do you use music and not other forms of art?
I both write and draw a lot and I'm very interested in movies. But music is what I like the best, I think. I grew up with music, and I'm surrounded by it every day. Besides, music is something we all receive, whether we like it or nor.

Will you be playing during the Pride Festival this year?
Well, yes, we'll see what the summer will bring. I've been in touch with Lars Åke Wilhelmsson – Babsan, that is – who offered me to perform at the Patricia gay club this summer.

What are you doing currently?
At the moment I'm working on the release of my debut single, so there's quite a lot to do. The most fun part, besides singing of course, is to market yourself, I think. I've gotten really good at that the last few years.

What do you do when you're not your alter ego – when you're just Dennis?
During the weekdays I study at a folk high school and the rest of the time I hang out with my friends, do some shopping or enjoy movies and music.

What are the goals for the next three years?
The goal is to be able to work with my music full time, and eventually be able to support myself doing what I like. In general, I want to have a healthy life, do a lot of fun stuff and maybe even find myself a boyfriend.

What do you think about the music in Sandviken?
Actually, I don't know much about local bands. I listen to plastic pop and disco and I don't think that genre is really represented around here. But if anyone knows any band within that genre, just let me know.

What would you like to say to the local inhabitants?
Never forget to be yourselves, and if you're ever sad, buy something pink. It always works for me.

What is courage?

When you hear the word "courage" many of you might think of superheroes and freedom fighters like Gandhi and Martin Luther King. When I hear "courage" I think of all those everyday heroes among us. I believe these unknown heroes are just as important as all the known ones.

So, who is an everyday hero? To me it's a person who is himself and who dares to stand up for his opinions. A person who dares to go against the stream and not fall for peer pressure. I think it's very important one dares to be oneself. I often see people who keep quiet about their opinions because they're afraid what everyone else might think. It's sad to see so many people take a lot of crap from others, and to just keep it within themselves. I wouldn't be able to stand it if I wasn't able to express my opinion.

Is it fair to pretend to be someone you're not and agree with everything, only so you won't be seen as an outsider? I would rather be an outsider than to pretend to be someone else. I believe the most important thing is to be yourself, and if we don't take that chance, then we've lost part of our identity.

I once knew a person who thought I was selfish and self-centered because I don't get involved in world problems. He also believed every human should actively work for peace on earth, and see to it that justice is made. This guy also believed everyone should be politically active, and as I wasn't very read up on politics and world wars, he patronized me. He almost seemed to think I was stupid.

I agree there is a need for commitment, but I also think there are many ways to show that you care. Not everyone can be engaged in the same things. I become very depressed when I hear about war and similar things, and politics really aren't my thing. As already there are many who are a lot more read up on those things, I think it's better I leave it to them. Instead I try to concentrate on changing the world on a smaller scale. I try to improve my surrounding and work against bullying and prejudice.

I don't think I'm a worse person because I'm not politically active, but I believe there are plenty of ways to improve the world. For me, it's about concentrating on my own surroundings. For me, courage doesn't need to be about fighting for world peace. It can be about daring to say your opinion and stand up for what you believe in.

I would like to give a standing ovation to all those everyday heroes out there, and those of you who dare to be yourself. Hang in there!
